Month 1: School Counseling

I’ve been a bit behind in blogging this past month. It seems wild that we’re already in March and halfway to Summer. Between job searching to starting as a school counselor, these past few weeks have been a whirlwind.

When I moved home at the end of December, I started searching for positions at the college, high school and elementary levels. I was having a hard time deciding which student population I wanted to work with most. Each level brings their own unique opportunities.

As much as I wanted to work with older students, I couldn’t shake what my professors had said all along. That I owed it to myself to use my skills and work with young children. Our youth are the future – if I have the skills to help in the foundational years, then I should use them.

First day working with mom!

I went with my gut –  accepted a position at the elementary level, and I absolutely LOVE it. I really can’t imagine starting my career as a school counselor anywhere else. I’m very blessed and thankful for how things have worked out.

I’ve always believed that things happen in life for a reason, and I truly believe I’m where I’m supposed to be. Of course, things haven’t been perfect. I’ve been nervous, excited, worried, stressed and hopeful.

Full circle – working with my Kindergarten teacher

With my first month down, I can’t wait to see where the next few months (years) will lead. It’s a great feeling to know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be – in a position of helping others.
