In our district, teachers and educators alike are celebrated with a Night of the Stars Gala that focuses on their achievements.
Schools nominate staff members for different categories, such as Outstanding First Year Teacher, Distinguished Minority Teacher, School Related Employee and Teacher of the Year.

I was lucky enough to be nominated to represent my school as their Outstanding First Year Teacher. I’ve talked about this before, but I have absolutely loved my first year as a school counselor.
It’s been an incredible experience to be back at my old elementary school working alongside some of my former teachers. You know how people say that things happen for a reason. I’m a firm believer in this. Everything from moving home, starting this job, working with my kiddos – it’s all happened for a reason.
Although I didn’t win overall for the District, I still felt like a winner. And it actually gave me a chance to talk about a valuable lesson w. my students. That even if we don’t win we can still be proud of ourselves.

I definitely felt like a winner in this outfit! The perfect black jumpsuit from White House Black Market (similar here). Paired it with a blush blazer, jewelry and a classic red lip. It gave me an extra boost of confidence as I walked across the stage.
And get this, it was the same stage I would walk in high school – talk about a surreal moment. As a product of SLC education, I am so proud to be back in my hometown helping the students of our community!
Rachel,
I know I’m a little late but congratulations on the honor of your nomination! I just came across your blog. It’s surreal to see all you Fairlawn kids grown up with adult jobs living your lives – I still see all of you lined up on stage at Honor Roll assemblies 😊 I thought of you last week as well. I was in Murphy and when I drove past the park I was reminded of the time we all had dinner together and then Caity, Brett, you, and Kevin all played at the playground. Time flies by doesn’t it? lol
Well, I hope things continue to go well for you! Tell your parents hello for me.
Hi! Thank you so much – I’m glad that you were able to find the blog. It’s very surreal to be back working there! I often catch myself thinking about my own experience at the school and the memories I made. I’m so jealous you were in Murphy! We went up last May and drove by the same park you’re talking about. We had the best time with Brett and Caity. I hope yall are doing great too!!
